Born in the Arab village of Tarshiha in 1955, Simon Shaheen is a Palestinian-American violinist and oud virtuoso whose work bridges traditional Arabic music with jazz and Western classical influences. He has consistently explored new sonic territories while deeply honoring the rich legacy of his cultural heritage. His compositions and improvisations demonstrate a masterful command of both traditional forms and innovative approaches. Shaheen’s contributions have garnered international acclaim, culminating in the 1994 National Heritage Award presented at the White House. He continues to perform and record, fostering cross-cultural understanding through his distinctive musical voice. Shaheen’s exploration extends beyond solo performances, notably as a core member of the ensemble Material, further showcasing his versatility and collaborative spirit.
