Charley Patton
About
The architect of Delta blues whose showmanship and mentorship defined American popular music.
Charley Patton stands as the foundational figure of Delta blues—a genre that would define American popular music for generations. Operating from Dockery Plantation near Ruleville, Mississippi, Patton developed his style under the mentorship of Henry Sloan, absorbing an early vernacular that predated formal blues terminology. His influence ripples through every Delta musician who followed: Tommy Johnson, Fiddlin' Joe Martin, Robert Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf all performed in his region and learned from his example. Patton’s showmanship transcended technical virtuosity. He performed with his guitar positioned at impossible angles—down across his knees, behind his head, behind his back—techniques that transformed the instrument into pure visual spectacle. His voice, roughened and raw, conveyed emotion through texture rather than polish. Born in 1891 in Hinds County, Mississippi, Patton died on April 28, 1934, from a mitral valve disorder, passing at the Heathman-Dedham plantation near Indianola. His death went unremarked in newspapers, yet his recordings and legacy secured his position as the father figure of Delta blues—the man who set the template for every blues musician to come.
