About
A Canadian band whose live shows ignited a generation of indie rock fans across Atlantic Canada.
Wintersleep emerged from the Halifax, Nova Scotia scene in 2001, building a reputation for energetic live performances that quickly resonated across Atlantic Canada and beyond. The band’s early sound, a blend of driving indie rock and atmospheric textures, established a loyal following. Initially comprised of Paul Murphy (guitar/vocals), Tim d’Eon (guitar/keyboards), and Loel Campbell (drums), Wintersleep gradually expanded its core lineup, incorporating musicians like Jud Haynes on bass and Mike Bigelow on keyboards before solidifying with Jon Samuel and Chris Bell.
Their self-titled debut in 2003 and the untitled follow-up in 2005 garnered critical attention and fueled extensive touring, establishing Wintersleep as a key player in the Canadian indie rock landscape. The band’s sound evolved through the 2010s, incorporating more expansive arrangements and nuanced songwriting—evident in albums like *New Inheritors* (2010) and *Hello Hum* (2012). *Welcome to the Night Sky* (2007) marked a pivotal moment, showcasing their ability to craft emotionally resonant songs with a distinct sense of place.
Wintersleep’s music consistently balances introspective lyrics with a vibrant, propulsive energy. They’ve cultivated a sound that feels both grounded and expansive—a hallmark of contemporary indie rock. The band continues to tour and record, maintaining a strong connection with their audience while consistently exploring new sonic avenues. Their enduring popularity speaks to their commitment to authentic songwriting and powerful live shows.
Dependent Music, a label originating in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994, has been a consistent home for Wintersleep’s releases, supporting their artistic development throughout their career.
