D.A.F. – Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft – emerged from Düsseldorf’s burgeoning post-punk scene in 1978, instantly establishing a sound that defied easy categorization. Their early work, characterized by stark, repetitive rhythms and detached, often provocative lyrics, challenged the prevailing musical norms. The band’s initial split in 1982 proved short-lived; they reformed in 1985, solidifying their status as innovators. While the original lineup featured Kurt Dahlke, his departure in 1979 and subsequent additions, like Chrislo Haas, subtly shifted the group’s sonic textures. The core dynamic remained – a marriage of cold, mechanical sounds and human vocal delivery – but the arrangements grew more complex. D.A.F.'s influence extended far beyond the NDW movement, impacting subsequent generations of electronic musicians.
