About
A Canadian indie rock mainstay, Constantines crafts a cool, melodic world built on guitar textures and understated rhythms.
Constantines emerged from the Canadian indie rock scene in the late 1990s, offering a sound steeped in melodic guitar work and a distinctly cool, understated energy. Formed in Guelph, Ontario in 1999, the band initially coalesced around the songwriting partnership of Bry Webb and Steve Lambke. Their early work, released on Three Gut Records, established a signature style: a blend of jangling guitars, subtle rhythms, and Webb’s distinctive vocals – a voice that navigates between detached cool and moments of raw emotion. Their first three albums – *Constantines* (2001), *Shine a Light* (2003), and *Tournament of Hearts* (2005) – solidified their reputation within the Canadian indie music community. These records showcased a band comfortable with dynamics, moving from quiet, introspective passages to bursts of energetic rock. The band’s sound resonated with a generation seeking authenticity and a rejection of overt posturing. The departure of Three Gut Records in 2007 prompted a shift, with their fourth album, *Kensington Heights* (2008), released on Arts & Crafts Productions, further refining their approach. Constantines maintains a steady presence, touring consistently and releasing new music. They stand as a prime example of a band that has carved out a respected space within indie rock through consistent quality and a refusal to compromise their artistic vision. The band’s current lineup features Bry Webb and Steve Lambke on vocals and guitar, Dallas Wehrle on bass, Will Kidman on keyboards, and Doug McGregor on drums.
