About

# Mourning Widows

Mourning Widows was a funk-rock project helmed by virtuoso guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, active from 1997 to 2001. The band crafted a distinctive sound that blended guitar-driven rock with post-grunge and alternative influences, drawing from Bettencourt's experience with Extreme while exploring funkier, more experimental territory. Though the project gained limited traction in the United States, both studio albums found considerable success in the Japanese market.

Following the conclusion of their touring cycle in 2001, Bettencourt dissolved the project and pivoted toward electronic and production-focused work under the moniker Population 1, marking a significant shift in his artistic direction that would influence his subsequent projects.
